ASTC Block-Size Determination Method based on PSNR Values

ASTC is one of the standard texture formats supported in OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan 1.0 (and later versions), it has been increasingly used on mobile platforms (Android iOS). ASTC’s most important feature block size configuration, thereby providing a trade-off between compression quality rates. With higher number textures, however, difficult to manually determine optimal sizes each texture. To solve problem, we present new approach based PSNR values automatically size. A brute-force approach, which compresses all compares compressed can increase time by up 14 times. In contrast, our three-step minimizes compression-time overhead. According experiments set including 64 various method determined from 4x4 12x12 reduced files 68%.
